Sehr kurzfristig wurde die 36. Ausgabe des Zevenheuvelenloop über 15 km im niederländischen Nijmegen wegen der hohen Corona-Inzidenzzahlen in den Niederlanden abgesagt. Mit der neuen Weltbestzeit von unglaublichen 44:20 Minuten sorgte bei der letzten Ausgabe die damals erst 21-jährige Äthiopierin Letesenbet Gidey (ETH) für ein Highlight in der Straßenlauf-Saison des Jahres 2019. Erst vor wenigen Wochen steigerte Gidey auch den Weltrekord im Halbmarathon auf grandiose 1:02:52. Die Ausnahmeläuferin aus Äthiopien wäre in diesem Jahr nicht am Start gewesen, dafür wollte aber ein anderer Superstar der Szene Joshua Cheptegei (UGA) einen Angriff auf seinen eigenen Weltrekord über 15 km von 41:05 unternehmen.
Dazu teilte der Bürgermeister von Nijmegen Hubert Bruls mit: “We have been busy mapping out the possibilities in recent days, but in the current situation, unfortunately, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that the event is currently not justified. All those people running through the streets, the length of the course, and with it the practical impossibility of regulating the public, turned out to be unrealistic in combination with the corona measures in force. That is why, in consultation with the organization and the municipality of Berg en Dal, we have decided not to let the run go ahead.”
