Nachdem der Haspa Hamburg Marathon auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben wurde, wird es am 11. April 2021 mit dem “NN Mission Marathon” einen Marathon geben, der allerdings nur ca. 100 “eingeladenen” Athleten vorbehalten sein wird. Dabei wird man nicht auf der angestammten Strecke durch die Hansestadt laufen, sondern einen 10,5 km Rundkurs in der Innenstadt wählen, der viermal passiert werden muss. Neben vier holländischen Startern (s.u.) aus dem NN Running Team von Global Sports Communication werden etliche deutsche Topläufer die letzte Chance ergreifen, die Olmpia Normen von 2:11:30 bei den Männern und 2:29:30 bei den Frauen zu unterbieten. Doch bei Männern sowie Frauen wird man deutlich schneller unterwegs sein müssen, ob noch einen freien Platz im deutschen Team zu erringen.

Von den maximal jeweils 3 deutschen Startern bei den Marathonläufen in Sapporo Anfang August dürften der neue Landesrekordler Amanal Petros (TV Wattenscheid) mit 2:07:18 beim Valencia Marathon 2020 sowie die Europarekordlerin im Halbmarathon der Frauen Melat Kejeta (Laufteam Kassel) mit ihrer PB von 2:23:57 beim Berlin Marathon 2019 so gut wie gesetzt sein. Sie werden in Hamburg nicht am Start sein. Hendrik Pfeiffer (TV Wattenscheid) steigerte sich vor rund einem Jahr auf 2:10:18 Stunden, Richard Ringer (LC Rehlingen) schaffte bei seinem Debüt im Dezember 2020 in Valencia auf Anhieb 2:10:59, was aber unter Umständen nicht für ein Olympia-Ticket reichen könnte.
Die Norm noch nicht erfüllt haben bisher Philipp Pflieger (LT Haspa Marathon Hamburg) mit 2:12:15, der deutsche Doppel-Meister Tom Gröschel (TC Fiko Rostock) mit 2:13:49 sowie der frühere deutsche Rekordhalter Arne Gabius (Therapie Reha Bottwartal) mit einer PB von 2:08:33, der aber zuletzt beim London Marathon im Oktober 2020 nur 2:14:25 erreichte. Für alle drei Läufer wären erst Zeiten von unter 2:10 Stunden relativ sichere Leistungen für eine Nominierung.
Bei den Frauen wird Deborah Schöneborn (LG Nord Berlin), die sich in Valencia auf eindrucksvolle 2:26:55 steigerte, zusammen mit ihrer Zwillingsschwester Deborah (PB 2:28:42) am Start sein wird. Im Rennen um die Tickets nach Olympia sind auch Katharina Steinruck (Eintracht Frankfurt) mit einer PB von 2:27:26), die deutsche Meisterin von 2018 Fabienne Königstein (MTG Mannheim) (2:32:35) sowie Anke Esser (Bayer Leverkusen) (2:32:06) für dem Lauf in Hamburg gemeldet.

In a hugely exciting and welcome announcement for the elite road running community, the bespoke NN Mission Marathon will take place on the streets of Hamburg on April 11. At the moment, there are four NN Running Team athletes up for this Mission: Björn Koreman, Marius Ionescu, Roy Hoornweg and Precious Mashele.
Organised by the NN Running Team, Global Sports Communication and the Hamburg Marathon, it is hoped the one-off marathon will serve up a fast race to give athletes the best possible chance to secure a qualification mark for the rescheduled Olympic Games in Tokyo. NN Group, the international financial services company, will be the title sponsor of this great event.

In these challenging times and with the road race calendar for the first half of 2021 decimated by the global pandemic, the involved parties were keen to arrange the race to provide a much-needed competitive opportunity for the athletes. Under the tagline ‘The fastest way to Tokyo’ it is hoped the race, which will take place around a looped 10.5km city centre route, will attract around 100 invited elite athletes.
